Gardália Festival 2026 – Tihany's Traditional Fish Festival

A Unique Fishing Tradition on Lake Balaton

Every autumn, Tihany celebrates its centuries-old fishing heritage at the Gardália Festival, one of the region's most distinctive traditional events.

The festival takes its name from the garda (sabrefish), a freshwater fish closely connected to Tihany's history. In the past, fishermen spotted large shoals from the surrounding hills and guided their boats towards them, creating a unique fishing tradition that remains part of the peninsula's cultural heritage.

Local Flavours and Autumn Traditions

Visitors can enjoy traditional fish dishes, local wines, craft markets, live music and family activities in the historic surroundings of Tihany.

Highlights include a nostalgic boat trip recalling the peninsula's fishing history, the ceremonial blessing of fish and new wine at Tihany Abbey, traditional fish-roasting demonstrations and a fish-cooking competition.
