The Legend of the Fairies of Lake Balaton

On moonlit nights, mysterious floating figures are said to appear above Lake Balaton, dancing silently over the water. By dawn, the mist swallows them, but many locals swear they’ve seen strange lights hovering over the waves.
According to legend, three beautiful fairy sisters once lived by the lake. Their beauty was renowned far and wide, and many sought their hearts. One day, three dragons came from a distant land and kidnapped the sisters, locking them away in their castles.
Their brave brother set out on a perilous journey to rescue them. He battled each dragon in turn, eventually defeating all three—but at the cost of his own life. The heartbroken sisters wept for days, and their tears flowed into streams, then rivers, and finally formed a vast lake. This is how Lake Balaton was born.
Since then, people say the fairies’ spirits return to the lake on quiet nights, remembering their brother’s sacrifice. If you take a peaceful stroll along the shore under the moonlight, you might see their shimmering forms—or hear the faint melody of their song echoing over the water.
Legend has it that anyone who makes a heartfelt wish in the presence of the fairies will see it come true. Lake Balaton, therefore, is not only a natural wonder, but also a living monument to love, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond of family.
