Skating on Lake Balaton – when it freezes
In colder winters, parts of the lake freeze, creating safe, designated areas where you can skate on natural ice. Sunshine, still water, and panoramic views make it a truly special experience. Where to go: Balatonföldvár, Balatonfenyves, Zamárdi, near the Tihany ferry, Balatongyörök, and Vonyarcvashegy. Artificial Ice Rinks – Winter 2026
When the lake doesn’t freeze, several towns around Balaton offer artificial rinks with winter vibes, music, and lights.
· Siófok – Ice Harbor on Main Square A key winter spot with festive lighting, hot drinks, weekend events, and free entry. Open: December to February Skate rental available on site
· Balatonfüred – Ice Rink on Zákonyi Promenade Near the Tagore Promenade and Christmas market, with music and lake views. Open: December to February Suitable for families and couples
· Balatonlelle – Rink at Event Square Close to the lake, this family-friendly rink includes a heated tent and weekend activities. Open: December to mid-February
· Tapolca – Rink by the Mill Pond A charming new addition next to the picturesque Malom-tó in the town centre. Open from mid-December, weather permitting Smaller rink, ideal for children and beginners
· Keszthely – Ice Rink by the Lake Skating with lake views near the town beach and pier.

· Polar Bear Run – Balatonalmádi Held at the end of January with multiple distances (3–6–9 km), cheerful atmosphere, medals, and a costume category
· Balaton Supermarathon Training Runs Shorter lakeside runs leading up to the March four-day running festival
Hévíz Buffalo Duathlon – Winter Challenge by Water and Land A unique outdoor competition held annually in Hévíz, combining 9.9 km of rowing and 11.5 km of running across the winter landscape. Participants can enter solo or in teams. Locations: Hévíz stream, Véderdő forest, and the area around the thermal lake This is a great choice for anyone looking for an active, nature-based winter challenge.
Skiing in Eplény – Just 30 Minutes from Lake Balaton
The Eplény Ski Arena is ideal for a day of winter sport, with snowmaking, ski rentals, beginner-friendly slopes, and ski school options. A great day trip from Balatonfüred or nearby towns.
