Veszprém Castle

Rising above the city on Castle Hill, Veszprémi Vár (Veszprém Castle) is one of Hungary’s oldest and most historically significant urban centres. Its origins date back to the 10th–11th centuries, when the first fortifications were established on the steep, naturally protected hilltop. 

Over the centuries, the castle has been repeatedly rebuilt and reshaped, resulting in the unique character it has today: rather than a single fortress, it forms an atmospheric district of historic buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and elegant Baroque architecture layered upon medieval foundations. The Castle District is home to many of Veszprém’s key landmarks, including the cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Firewatch Tower, and several museums and galleries. Walking through its streets offers a journey through Hungarian history, from the early Christian kingdom to the present day. Beyond its architectural and historical importance, the castle also holds a special place in Hungarian cultural identity. Veszprém was known as the “City of Queens,” as Hungarian queens were traditionally crowned by its bishop, highlighting the site’s long-standing ecclesiastical significance. 

Today, Veszprémi Vár is both a living cultural centre and a major tourist attraction, offering panoramic views over the Séd Valley and the Bakony Hills, as well as a rich combination of history, art, and atmosphere.
