St. Michael’s Cathedral is the principal church of Veszprém and one of the oldest ecclesiastical centres in the country.
Located within the historic Veszprém Castle district, it has played a central role in Hungarian religious and royal history for centuries. The origins of the cathedral date back to the early Hungarian state, traditionally linked to the reign of Saint Stephen I of Hungary. Over time, the building has undergone several reconstructions, resulting in a layered architectural character that reflects Romanesque foundations, later Gothic elements, and Baroque transformations. The interior is defined by its monumental yet harmonious design, with richly decorated altars and a solemn atmosphere that reflects its status as a basilica. As the seat of the archbishop, it remains an active place of worship while also serving as a key cultural and historical landmark.
From its elevated position, the cathedral offers not only spiritual significance but also a strong visual presence within the cityscape, forming a defining element of Veszprém’s skyline and identity.
