Rózsakő (Rose Stone)

Badacsonyi Rózsakő is one of the most famous natural landmarks of the Badacsony region.

The large, flat basalt rock is located on the hillside above the Kisfaludy House and is believed to have rolled down from the mountain in the distant past. The stone was named after Róza Szegedy, who according to tradition often sat here with the Hungarian poet Sándor Kisfaludy, admiring the beauty of Lake Balaton. Their romantic story inspired the local legend connected to the rock. According to local folklore, the Rózsakő has magical powers. It is said that if a girl and a boy sit on the stone together, holding hands with their backs turned to Lake Balaton, they will become a couple within the same year. Another version of the legend says that if a girl sits on the stone facing away from the lake and thinks of the person she loves, that person’s heart will soon belong to her. Next to the large table-like basalt block, a small resting area has been created with benches, tables and an information board for visitors. 

The stone gave its name to the Rózsakő grape variety, while the nearby historical house of Róza Szegedy and Sándor Kisfaludy can still be seen in the area today. The site is freely accessible and can be visited throughout the year.
