Kis-Balaton—one of the most valuable wetland areas in Europe—is known in many ways: as a bird reserve, a national park, a Ramsar site, and the birthplace of institutionalized nature conservation in Hungary through the figure of the first nature conservation ranger, the former “egret guard.”
It is also the romantic setting of István Fekete’s novels, the nursery of Lake Balaton’s fish population, a water protection system, and an ecotourism destination.
