Kányaváry Wine Estate

The introductions of wineries and winemakers often begin like this: “…as a descendant of a third-generation cooper family…” My story is different. Allow me to introduce myself: I am Zoltán Szabadics. An engineer, a businessman, the husband of a wonderful woman – Éva Rádi – who has given birth to five sons, and for the past few years, a hobby viticulturist and winemaker, as well as a sommelier. 

How did I come into contact with nature, viticulture, and thus winemaking? As easy as it is to define, it is just as difficult—but organizing my thoughts and avoiding clichés, here it is: After a full day of business meetings in Budapest, I returned home longing for nothing more than peaceful silence and nature… So my path led me straight to the “hill” of Zalaszabar. As I mentioned, I try to avoid clichés, but not then and there—because nature spoke to me and captivated me. Sharing this experience with my wife, we made an immediate decision. As productive, constructive individuals who continuously build and create, we saw that this wonderful landscape—with its remarkable natural endowments—was on the verge of decline. The idea emerged to purchase the former Baán Estate together with Éva and revive it: our goal is to restore the prestige of Zala wines to where it stood a century ago. To the forefront. We raise our children with a love for nature, production, and the land; the five of them together shape the legend of Kányaváry. We trust that the estate we envisioned, along with its excellent flavors, aromas, and atmosphere, will bring great joy to our visitors as well. Estate Our family vineyard overlooks the picturesque protected natural area of Kis-Balaton, at the heart of which lies the famous bird reserve, Kányavári Island. Inspired by the mystique of the Kányavári name and wine, we created the name Kányaváry Wine Estate. This compound evokes the world of a noble, mystical medieval family, reflecting the romantic untouched character of the landscape, which inspires the imagination.

Surrender yourself to carefree pleasures as you taste wines made from locally grown grapes, accompanied by excellent regional dishes from Zala.

The most memorable stories are always born on special occasions, surrounded by people who matter to us, at the right time. One could also say: when everything happens in the right place, at the right time. The right time is different for everyone, but we can help you choose the right place so that the memory you take with you becomes a heartfelt experience. The Kányaváry Wine Estate’s event center welcomes guests with a new hall accommodating 150–180 people, offering a beautiful view of Kis-Balaton, our signature excellent wines, and renewed gastronomy. 

On the Öreghegy of Zalaszabar, there is no longer any need to worry about the weather, as we welcome guests not only outdoors but also indoors—independently of weather conditions.
