The Inota Thermal Power Plant – formerly known as the November 7 Power Plant – was one of Hungary’s most significant industrial investments of the 1950s.
Built near Várpalota, on the outskirts of Inota, it formed part of the country’s first Five-Year Plan. Construction began in 1950, and the plant commenced operations in 1951, primarily supplying energy to the surrounding industrial facilities, most notably the aluminium smelter in Várpalota. Operating with the modern technology of its time, the power plant played a key role in Hungary’s electricity production for decades. Its iconic cooling towers and monumental turbine hall remain defining features of the landscape to this day. The plant was permanently shut down in 2001, yet its impressive industrial structures still stand.
Today, the site is gaining increasing attention as a unique industrial heritage location, attracting tourism and serving as a venue for cultural events.
