Hegyestű Geological Visitor Site

Located between Zánka and Monoszló, on the eastern edge of the Káli Basin, the Hegyestű Geological Visitor Site is one of the most unique natural attractions of the Balaton region. 

This former basalt volcano rises to 337 metres and offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the inner structure of an ancient volcanic cone. The northern side of the hill was once quarried, revealing spectacular, up to 50-metre-high basalt walls with distinctive polygonal columns formed as lava cooled millions of years ago. This striking geological formation is not only unique in Hungary but also considered a rarity on a European scale. At the site, a small exhibition introduces visitors to the geological history of the Balaton Uplands, the formation of volcanic witness hills and the legacy of basalt mining. The outdoor stone park further enriches the experience, presenting characteristic rock types of the region and offering a true geological journey through time. 

From the top of the basalt cone, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the Balaton Uplands, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of nature and human landscape. Whether approached on foot, by bike or by car, Hegyestű is both an educational and visually impressive stop for those exploring the natural heritage of the region.
