Benedict Hill

Benedict Hill – secrets in the shadow of the castle Benedek Hill rises on the northern side of Veszprém Castle, accessible via a charming, cobbled staircase that leads visitors upward. 

This small dolomite hill not only offers a remarkable panoramic view over Veszprém and the valley of the Séd Stream, but also carries layers of history spanning centuries. The hill takes its name from Saint Benedict. A chapel is believed to have once stood at its summit, and the area also served as a burial site. During the Ottoman period, it functioned as a strategic point, while in the Second World War, the cave system beneath the hill provided shelter for the local population. Today, Benedek Hill is a scenic, atmospheric excursion spot where history, nature, and urban panorama meet. 

A short walk up the steps feels like a journey through time, and from the top, the past and beauty of Veszprém unfold simultaneously before the visitor.
