Dear Friend,
We, the Benedictine monks of Tihany Abbey and the operators and staff of the Abbey Rege Confectionery, warmly welcome you to the courtyard of the nearly thousand-year-old abbey rising above Lake Balaton, crowning the landscape. Our greeting begins with the word PAX, meaning peace. Until the mid-20th century, this sacred place was truly an island of silence and tranquillity, preserving the resting place of Hungary’s fourth king, Andrew I of Hungary (†1060).
On 16 June 1961, the confectionery—named after the famous Tihany Echo legend—opened its doors. Since then, it has welcomed guests from all over the world, from Canada to New Zealand. “Rege is a delightful blend of modern refinement and medieval hospitality.” We hope you will experience the ancient serenity of the Tihany Peninsula, the joy of fine food and drinks, and the genuine spirit of Benedictine hospitality here, in what is often called the “royal box” of Hungary—at the Abbey Rege Confectionery.
Thank you for your trust, and we look forward to welcoming you again. Did you know that our confectionery has been welcoming visitors to Tihany for more than 60 years?
