Balaton Climate

When to Visit: Balaton's Climate Calendar
Lake Balaton shapes its own weather, setting it apart from the rest of Hungary. The lake region enjoys milder temperatures year-round but receives slightly more rainfall, which helps create ideal conditions for the vineyards dotting the surrounding hills.
Summer visitors can expect abundant sunshine with temperatures reaching 35°C in July and August, while May and September offer pleasant 25°C days with fewer crowds. Pack a light jacket for cool lakeside evenings and boat trips.
The lake's unique geography—with steeper northern shores contrasting against the gradually sloping southern beaches—creates different swimming experiences around its perimeter.
Balaton's modest average depth of approximately 3.5 meters means these waters warm remarkably quickly under spring sunshine. In years with particularly favorable weather, the southern shallows can reach swimmer-friendly temperatures by early May, though only the brave venture in when water temperatures hover between 16-18°C.
By June, however, the lake transforms into the comfortable "Hungarian Sea" that draws swimmers throughout the summer months.
Winter brings its own charm as patches of ice often form across parts of the lake, creating a different kind of beauty.
